Nurture Group

We now have a Nurture Group in school. The group runs each afternoon in a dedicated room. It is led by Miss Sarah Salmon a specially trained teaching assistant who is supported by a second teaching assistant. Miss Aimee Utting initially worked with Miss Salmon but she has left school to work in Australia. Mrs Sandra Thompson has replaced Aimee.

The Nurture Group is not a place where teachers send ‘naughty’ children. The Nurture Group provides an environment in school that is safe and secure with a home-like atmosphere. Some of the reasons for children attending the group may be:

  • Concern with regard to social skills.
  • Developmental delay.
  • Language delay.
  • Children who find it hard to engage.
  • Children who would benefit from making a relationship of trust with an adult in school.
  • Children who have suffered trauma in their family such as bereavement or marriage breakdown and who need extra support to help them to cope.

The group takes up to eight children who are chosen through careful assessment and discussion between the child’s class teacher, Miss Salmon and Pam Jones, the Deputy Head Teacher/SENCO.

The Nurture Group offers a warm and structured environment, planned for by Miss Salmon. It is an environment of consistent boundaries, discipline and learning. Planned activities help to develop the children’s play, their self-esteem and confidence and their emotional and academic development.

Children work in the Nurture Group during each afternoon of the week. This may be for one or two terms, (but more if needed), after which the child is reintegrated into their class.

Carlton Infant Academy has used a precious stone as a name for each class. The Nurture Group name is ‘Opals’.

“Opal is good for the ability to clearly express yourself, to connect with others, and to voice your opinions”.
