Equity & Diversity
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB)
“Diversity is being asked to the party; inclusion is being asked to dance”.
Verna Myers
At The Carlton Infant Academy, we aspire to create and maintain a school environment where all children and adults can thrive and be authentic versions of themselves. Rather than aiming for equality; giving everyone the same, we believe in equity. Equity requires us to identify and address inequality and do something about this.
At the Carlton Infant Academy, we embrace all 9 protected characteristics and promote equality of opportunity between persons who share a protected characteristic and those who do not share it.

Our Equality Objectives:
- To reduce prejudice and increase understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion, more specifically an understanding of race equality by the whole school community including SLT, governors, staff, pupils and parents.
- For pupils to develop their self-esteem and to recognise that they are each valued as individuals, through actively embracing different cultures and EAL family involvement within our school.

Our DEIB journey:
As part of our journey in fostering belonging for all we have assessed how our resources, books, displays and teaching materials enthusiastically introduce children to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB).
In addition to this, throughout the year at The Carlton Infant Academy we aim to provide a wide range of diverse co-curricular opportunities such as clubs, trips, celebration days and visitor opportunities.
To help us achieve this, we are currently developing our ‘No Outsiders’ curriculum to complement our PSHRE curriculum. These will be taught weekly in addition to assemblies and weekly circle times, which are used to expand on the learning that week and provide opportunities for children to take part in rich discussions.
