Mathematics

“Without mathematics, there’s nothing you can do. Everything around you is mathematics. Everything around you is numbers.”

- Shakuntala Devi

We follow the White Rose Maths scheme, offering a structured, progressive approach that builds confidence and mastery through small, manageable steps. Our aim is to nurture a deep understanding and enjoyment of mathematics, empowering children to become confident, capable problem-solvers.

We believe maths is essential for making sense of the world. Through exploring patterns, numbers, and spatial relationships, children develop valuable reasoning and problem-solving skills that support everyday life.

Our Approach

We use the Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract (CPA) model to ensure all pupils develop a secure understanding of mathematical concepts. Fluency in the fundamentals is central to our curriculum, enabling children to apply their knowledge with confidence and accuracy.

We are committed to inclusive, high-quality maths education, fostering independence, resilience, and a love of learning that extends beyond the classroom.

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

In EYFS, children explore numbers through hands-on activities and visual representations. Using resources like counters, cubes, and role play, they build a strong foundation in number sense and relationships. These experiences are supported by teacher-led sessions covering key mathematical areas.

Our long-term plans for Nursery and Reception, aligned with White Rose Maths, ensure a cohesive and progressive learning journey.

Key Stage 1

In KS1, we continue with White Rose Maths using a mastery-based approach that supports all learners. Pupils build strong foundations through small, logical steps, developing confidence and resilience. Mistakes are embraced as learning opportunities.

We work closely with the NCETM Maths Hub, engaging in ongoing professional development and collaborative planning. This partnership ensures our teaching reflects the latest research and best practices, supporting consistent, high-quality maths education across EYFS and KS1.
