Science
Science is a vibrant and essential part of our curriculum, designed to nurture children’s natural curiosity and encourage them to explore, question, and understand the world around them. We believe that young children are born scientists- eager to investigate, experiment, and make sense of their environment- and our curriculum is built to support and extend this innate curiosity.
Our science teaching is rooted in practical, hands-on experiences that make learning meaningful and memorable. Children are encouraged to observe closely, ask thoughtful questions, make predictions, and carry out simple investigations. They learn to gather and record data, identify patterns, and draw conclusions- developing not only scientific knowledge but also critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
We track the knowledge and skills taught in Science through our Key Knowledge Progression Documents (KKPDs). These documents ensure that we plan for the knowledge required in each year group and that our curriculum is carefully sequenced. This allows children to revisit and build upon key concepts such as:
- Seasonal Changes - observing weather patterns and how the environment changes across the year
- Plants and Animals - identifying, classifying, and understanding the needs of living things
- Materials - exploring the properties and uses of everyday materials
- Habitats - understanding how living things depend on their environment
- Scientific Enquiry - developing skills in observing, testing, and evaluating
Our curriculum is enriched with outdoor learning, cross-curricular links, and themed science weeks that bring the subject to life. We aim to foster a sense of wonder and responsibility for the natural world, laying the foundations for a lifelong interest in science and discovery.
